Portlands’s White House Launches Minimonies & Sequel Weddings In Latest Lockdown

Pandemic lockdown inspires Portland's White House to meet needs of couples getting married by offering Minimonies for parties up to 10 & Sequel Weddings; two ceremonies with one for groups of 10 followed by the bigger event with friends & families when lockdown is lifted.

Portland’s White House, a Bed & Breakfast that also serves as an event venue set in an imposing Greek Revival mansion, is introducing “minimonies” and sequel weddings to accommodate couples whose pending nuptials have been interrupted by Governor Kate Brown’s recent lockdown mandate. According to owner Frank Groff, minimonies are small wedding ceremonies that accommodate up to 10 people each of whom adheres to social distancing measures while sequel weddings are largely for couples deciding to have two distinct weddings — the first, a minimony, to honor their original wedding date and a second, much larger ceremony attended by a broader range of friends and family. The Knot, a go-to wedding planning website, says that sequel weddings are gaining in popularity during the pandemic because couples want to honor their original wedding date or for legal and tax purposes. Both options include overnight stays.

“Minimonies allow you to solidify your union and honor your first proposed date while sequel weddings offer couples not only that benefit but the opportunity to bring your original vision to life further down the road,” says Groff, who invested $1 million restoring the 1911 historic property after purchasing it in 2018.

Earlier this year, Groff and his partner, David Krause, introduced Zoom Weddings that allow up to 10 in-person guests and the potential to add dozens of virtual family and friends thanks to the popular Zoom app, a web-based video conferencing tool that allows users to gather together online.

Situated in the upscale Irvington neighborhood, Portland’s White House underwent an extensive remodel of both the main and carriage houses with the intent of restoring it to its former glory. It total, there are 9 large bedrooms, each with an ensuite bath. In addition, the mansion has a grand foyer distinguished by a hand-painted mural and sweeping staircase that leads to the upstairs bedrooms. Also on the main floor is a living room with a grand piano, game room, commercial kitchen, private office and dining room where breakfast is served each morning. Downstairs is an 85-seat ballroom.

Portland’s White House was built for Oregon timber baron Robert Lytle, who spared no expense on its construction. He made it fireproof with metal lath and plaster and tile roofs then carefully installed the very finest materials including Povey Bros. stained glass, known as “The Tiffany of the Northwest.”
