Toronto Waldorf Academy Charles Andrade Colorist Style Creative Mural Completed

A leading artist has painted a mural at Waldorf Academy in celebration of color as the nature and nourishment of the human soul. Art plays a big part in the curriculum at Waldorf Academy, where the children benefit from a creative and stimulating environment.

Charles Andrade, the world renowned artist, has completed a mural in Waldorf School downtown Toronto. Charles Andrade paints in the colorist style that has evolved from his initial training in painting and art therapy, which he studied in England at Tobias School of Art & Therapy.

Waldorf Academy has over 30 years of experience in educating young minds from Pre-K to Grade 8. It provides children with a unique and stimulating, creative environment to learn and develop based on a proven alternative education model.

Lazure painting is unique to the Waldorf education system. The Lazure method, as indicted by Rudolf Steiner, is ancillary support to the curriculum. Steiner designed the color scheme of the classrooms to work with the developmental stages of children, moving from kindergarten to high school.

The painting showcases an in-depth understanding of color as defined by Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe, and elaborated on by the painter Liane Collot d’Herbois.

Charles Andrade stated: “The fluid quality of the color is very important as it mirrors the transcendent quality of the human soul. Much like a true process of thinking, where one begins with a hazy idea of what one wants to focus on with the mind, gradually the spiraling process of creation intensifies from the light to the darkness of a concrete thought or the material end of a painting.”

He added: “In the pastel medium, I am interested in the form of things, opaque color and how value creates the forms I am trying to define. I see it as a balance to the ethereal large scale wall and canvas work I do otherwise: contraction and expansion, two principles of human life and being.”

The artist indicated that the colors on the walls be of a fluid, atmospheric quality where tonal hues weave through each other in a subtle manner. As the children perceive this movement, it strengthens their young souls and initiates a regenerative/healing response.

For Waldorf Academy, the color schemes he chose were determined by the ambient light pouring in from both the front windows and the skylight stairway leading up to the classrooms. For the short entryway, he wanted to bring the warmth of the exterior facade into this space, and used the brick color for the step panels.
